Air Force veterans & mesothelioma
Air Force veterans were exposed to asbestos in aircraft brake systems, engine insulation, base infrastructure, and civil engineering work. If you served in the U.S. Air Force and were diagnosed with mesothelioma or another asbestos-related cancer, you may be entitled to compensation from asbestos lawsuits and asbestos trust funds. This is separate from VA disability — most veterans pursue all three at once.

How Air Force veterans were exposed to asbestos
Aircraft mechanics handled asbestos-containing brake linings, gaskets, valve packing, and engine insulation on bombers, fighters, and transports from WWII through the 1980s. Civil engineers and base maintenance crews worked with asbestos-containing pipe lagging, boiler insulation, roofing, joint compound, and floor tile across hangars, barracks, and headquarters buildings. Flight-line and missile-silo personnel encountered asbestos fireproofing in confined spaces.
Roles with the heaviest asbestos exposure
- Aircraft Mechanic (2A series)
- Civil Engineer (3E series)
- Heating, Ventilation, A/C (3E1X1)
- Pavements & Construction Equipment (3E2X1)
- Structural (3E3X1)
- Electrical Systems (3E0X1)
- Missile Maintenance (2M series)
Where exposure was most common
- Wright-Patterson AFB, OH
- Tinker AFB, OK
- Hill AFB, UT
- Kelly AFB / JBSA, TX
- Kadena AB, Japan
- Ramstein AB, Germany
- McClellan AFB, CA (closed)
- Norton AFB, CA (closed)
Era of service
Asbestos use was heaviest in the WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Cold War eras. Mesothelioma typically appears 20–50 years after exposure, which means veterans diagnosed today were often exposed during these decades.
Three compensation streams — not just one
Most eligible veterans pursue all three at the same time:
- Asbestos tort lawsuits against the private companies that made the asbestos-containing products used in the military.
- Asbestos bankruptcy trust fund claims against the trusts those companies left behind. Many veterans qualify for 5–8 trusts at once.
- VA disability benefits (handled separately through a VA-accredited representative — not through this site).
